Create a Custom URL

Create custom URLs to direct a viewer to specific web content. This feature asks you to create a URL slug, then has you select a link or web page, document, or image to direct the website viewer to. Follow these steps to create a custom URL on your website:

The custom URLs could positively impact the SEO of a website when used correctly.
  • Short and precise page URLs are better than long URLs that don’t clearly identify what content is on the page.
  • Since the structure of website URLs for other service providers are unique to their system, Custom URLs also help prevent the loss of Search Standings due to 404 “Page not found”  Errors once a domain is mapped over to a new DC website.

First, open your website in DistributorCentral's website editor:

  1. While logged into your DistributorCentral account, click on the Websites menu on the left-hand side
  2. Click on Hosting Manager
  3. When the Website hosting manager page loads, find the website you want to edit, and to the far right click the Manage button
  4. You will be taken to a page where you can edit the website name, URL, domain mappings, and snapshots
  5. To customize your live website, simply click on the Edit button to the far right corner

Now that you have the editor open, you can start creating your custom URLs.:
* Note: Its recommended to have the link or web page, document, or image that your view will be directed to already created, or added to your website library.

  1. In the left side menu, click the Library button
  2. Under Library, click the Custom URLs link
  3. When the Custom URLs window opens, click the Add New Custom URL link that appears to the right of the Custom URLs window heading
  4. The Add New Custom URL window will pop open. Here you will first create the URL slug that your viewer will use to access the specified content. The slug is added to the end of your website domain as shown here: https://www.mycustomdomain.com/custom-url-slug
  5. Next, you will need to select the Link Type that your customer will be directed to. Is the content a Document, Image, or Link?
  6. Now you will select the content under the Link Type section by click the Change {{link type}} button. This button is dynamic and will change depending on what Link Type you have selected. If you are directing the viewer to a Document, you will see a Change Document button below. Image will show Change Image, and Link will show Change Link
  7. The next window that pops up will provide you with a list of existing documents, images, or links that already exist on your website. Click on the content that your viewer should see when they visit your specified URL Slug
  8. Once you've selected the content, click the blue Save New Custom URL button in the bottom right corner of the Add New Custom URL window.
  9. Then click Done in the Custom URLs window
  10. Finally, Save your changes.

To test your new Custom URL...

  • Type in your website's domain
  • Add a forward slash (/)
  • Then type your URL slug exactly as you added it earlier
  • Hit enter.

Once you've hit Enter, you should be directed to the specified content within your DistributorCentral website. Your final address should follow this format:

domain-name-here.com/custom-url-slug-here

Note: Custom URLs will direct viewers to the content you've specified, however they will see the actual content URL within their address bar once they've been directed your specified content.
